What you can’t put in the book

In a discussion about biographies somebody said “The problem with the autobiography is that you can’t include the important truths until everybody is dead – and that includes the author”.

True. You are likely to be considered rude and unkind – and possibly cruel and embittered – if you include everything in your life story. So disappointing for the reader or researcher, but there it is.

Being kind is a desirable human trait (although the Selfish Gene might dispute that), and very often it is most evident in keeping a secret.

Of course, some secrets are better shared (Is it then still a secret?) because your living with the secret may exacerbate negative feelings and prove debilitating.

Secrets have a knack of changing shape and becoming irrational.
An independent view brings them back to reality.
